Galatians 5:16-26: The 9 Fruit of the Holy Spirit

Fruit of the Holy Spirit

Fruit of the Holy Spirit is the nature of God and the character of Jesus Christ. The scripture on the fruit of the Holy Spirit is Galatians 5:16-26. Several people mispronounce the fruit of the Holy Spirit to the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Part of the article is to highlight a simplified understanding of the 9 fruit of the Holy Spirit.

One thing about the fruit of the Holy Spirit is that it is expressed inwards. This means that God works on our inside-out. He makes you useable first inward and what is inwards changes the outward appearance. The fruit of the Holy Spirit is a character-based formation which is the easiest way to conform to the image of Christ even as the application of the word and prayers abides.

Some people asked if there are 7 fruits of the Holy Spirit or 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit, and 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit. It is unbiblical to say fruits of the Holy Spirit but instead the fruit of the Holy Spirit. This is the correct statement of the scripture and this article will explain while the Bible calls it the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

What is the fruit of the Holy Spirit?

There are different questions about the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Truthfully speaking: how many fruit of the Holy Spirit does the bible recordAre there 12 fruit of the Holy Spirit or 9 fruit of the Holy Spirit or unlimited? Since the scripture is our final authority in this kind of matter, it will be wise to make references.

According to Galatians 5:22-23, there is 9 fruit of the Holy Spirit which include: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The bible says against these there is no law. Most people say that there are 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit, this is in addition to Humility, meekness and forgiveness as stated in Colossians 3:12-13. They are right too.

LOVE: God is love. Therefore, you must show love to your neighbour as Christ did. The proof of your love for God is by obedience to His word. Also, the practical way to show that you love God is by loving your neighbour purely. He who loves God and keeps His commands, Him and His father will make a home in him. (some scriptures on love are 1 John 3:16-23, 4:6-7, 16-20, 5:1-5, 2 Peter 4:8, John 8:42, Ephesians 1:4, 1 Corinthians 18:4-8).

JOY: the joy of the Lord is your strength. This is expressed first internally and its effect on you brings peace to you and your neighbour. Joy is different from happiness because happiness is caused by external events but joy comes from the Holy Spirit. (Some scriptures on joy are Psalm 16:11, 21:1, 30:5, Isaiah 12:3, Jeremiah 15:16, John 16:22,24, Acts 13:52, Roman 14:17, 15:13, 1 Thessalonians 1:6, 1 Peter 4:13, 3 John 1:4).

PEACE: peace is the stillness or absence of fear despite the tides of life. According to Ephesians 2: 14, Jesus Christ became our peace. Jesus Christ showed the way of peace which is incomparable. (Luke 1:79, Romans 5:1, 3:17, 8:6, 14:17, 19, 15:13, 3316:20, 1 Cor. 14:33, Col 3:15, Phil. 4:6-7).

LONGSUFFERING: this is the ability to persevere or endure suffering for a long. It is a virtue to remain in faith despite the pressure of life and persecution. God is a longsuffering God (Exodus 34:6, Numbers 14:18, Psalm 86:15, Jeremiah 15:15, Romans 2:4, EPH 4:1-2, COL 3:12-13).

KINDNESS: this could be known as favour, compassion, good deed or mercy. (Gen 40:14, 1 Chronicles 19:2, Psalm 31:21, 117:2, Proverbs 19:22, Acts 28:2, Eph. 2:7, Col. 3:12, 2 Peter1:7).

GOODNESS: this is the nature of God’s glory. The fruit of the Spirit or light is in all goodness, righteousness and truth. (Some bible verses on goodness are: Exodus 33:19, 34:6, Psalm 27:13, 31:19, 52:1, 65:11, 68: 10, 107:9, Romans 2:4, 15:14, Eph. 5:9).

FAITHFULNESS: this is the unfailing nature or being committed to doing or holding unto truth and righteousness. (Psalm 89:24, 33, 92:2, Titus 1:9, Proverbs 13:17, 14:5, 28:20).

GENTLENESS: gentleness is being mild or moderate. Gentle people are not proud or boastful. The Bible commands that gentleness should be made evident to all men. Also, people should be of a gentle mind and spirit towards others. (Phil.4:5, Psalm 18:35, 2Cor. 10:1, 1 Thess.2:7, 2 Tim.2:24, Titus 3:2, James 3:17, 1 Peter 2:18).

SELF-CONTROL: this is the character of the Holy Spirit that is responsible for controlling or placing a limit on every activity that goes on your spirit, body and soul. It is called the regulator or process control element in your spirit. Self-control functions with your conscience and when you lose conscience, your sensitivity to the Holy Spirit is in doubt. You see this fruit in action during the time of anger, pride and other things. When you possess this fruit, you will be able to walk worthy of the Lord and control yourself in all situations. The Holy Spirit uses this to control your life and conscience so that you will not fall out of control.

Why is it called the fruit of the Holy Spirit and not the fruits of the Holy Spirit?

9 fruit of the Holy Spirit

The character or nature of the Holy Spirit as recorded in Galatians 5:22-23 is considered as one not many. It is called the fruit of the Holy Spirit because they are intermingled in finding expression in man and all are the product of one another.

The outcome or result of one fruit gives full expression to another fruit in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of truth and Christ is called the truth (John 14). The Holy Spirit takes from what is of Christ and gives us which TRUTH. So all come in form of truth which can sanctify Believers.

Now, this truth finds expression in different dimensions or forms to build our character as humans. So the TRUTH which is Christ or His life and lifestyle is what forms our character which is not different from the fruit. So considering the source, it is one but the outcome or the results on individual lives, are many.

Secondly, God is Love and whatever that will proceed from Him to us through the Holy Spirit must be love or like love. Notice that love is in the list of the fruit of the Holy Spirit, God cannot give you something different other than His nature or Himself.

So what the Holy Spirit brings from Christ is Love which is God. This Love finds expression in us and results in different outcomes. Christ which Love is the fulfilment of the Law and against the fruit of the Holy Spirit, there is no law.

Also, the total of the law is love, meaning that when we have the Love of God through the Holy Spirit, joy will not lack, self-control will be there and the rest present. Love is the ultimate. There it is called the fruit of the Holy Spirit and not the fruits of the Holy Spirit because of the source. Now, when that which proceeds from God comes to us it has several results based on the conditions Believers find themselves.

Why do Believers need the fruit of the Holy Spirit or the benefits of the Holy Spirit?

The fruit of the Holy Spirit is necessary for the life of a Believer because it helps you behave like Christ or achieve Christ-likeness. You can have the gifts of the Holy Spirit and be condemned but not in the case of the fruit of the Holy Spirit. The reason is that it is the very nature or character of God.

Some of the benefits of possessing the fruit of the Holy Spirit are many. From the context of Galatians 5:16-26, Believers were encouraged to walk in the spirit such that, they would not fulfil or gratify the flesh or walk in the flesh. So possessing the fruit of the Holy Spirit in increasing measure will help you not to walk in the flesh. It will help your faith not be unprofitable.

The fruit of the Holy Spirit helps you walk in holiness (Roman 6:22). It is a guarantee of eternal life in Christ on the day of judgement. In summary, the benefits of having the fruit of the Holy Spirit are:

  1. You will not walk after the flesh.
  2. You will walk in holiness.
  3. You will have the character of God.
  4. You will have intimacy with God.
  5. You will live in peace with all men.
  6. You will have everlasting life at last.
